Keeping Safe

March22

2A has been learning about the importance of keeping safe as part of this term’s Inquiry learning. Our Inquiry question, ‘What helps to keep me safe?’, has led us to ask lots of questions about our personal safety and how to respond if we are in danger.  Earlier in the term, we went on a walk around the nearby streets and identified different signs and discussed what they mean and what they are for. We then followed up by becoming school safety inspectors and identified hazards around the school.  Students created their own safety sign for a particular hazardous area and wrote a letter to the school O.H.S Officer, Mr Parrotte, to ask that a sign be placed where there is danger.

More recently, students have been becoming more aware about Stranger Danger through a great educational interactive game called ‘Being Safety Smart’.  Among many of the important messages, one focused on ‘Trusted Adults’.

We talked about who our trusted adults are if we need to ask for help. Students included their teacher or the school principal if they didn’t have trusted adults other than their parent/carer.

We then discussed possible scenarios and what we should do if a stranger is making us feel unsafe or uncomfortable. We must always tell our trusted adult and not keep unsafe experiences to our self. our trusted are there to listen to us.

In the coming days, students will act out a role play in small groups to demonstrate their understanding of what they should do in various unsafe situations.
